Never Before Seen Photos of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals: 1962-1970

The NHRA National Dragster photo archive is one of the preeminent collections of motorsport and hot rod photos in the world. Born from the vision of Wally Parks, it’s been curated by the NHRA’s in-house Photo Department and used to create every single issue of National Dragster for the last 60 years.

During our pause in racing action we’ll be sharing this drag racing treasure trove with you and publishing-never-before-seen photos from our vault. The NHRA has built us the tools, and we’ve been given the opportunity—it’s time we shared this with you.

This collection of images was the inspiration for 2020’s issue #1 of NHRA National Dragster, which celebrated the 60th running of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. They were originally compiled for an exhibit at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Museum of Photography in 2005 to showcase the drag racing past of Pomona, Calif.

Click through each raw image (some with the original grease markings—possibly made by Wally himself—to show the desired cropping) for look at the 1962-1970 Winternationals in all of its glorious shades of horsepower, innovation, and possibility. And come back tomorrow to see what other riches we’ve surfaced to share with you. Enjoy.
